As humans when we are hungry we can eat almost anything edible, but dogs, when they are hungry, in desperation, will really eat anything to try to survive, this Great Dane is a sad example of this.
The poor starving dog was tethered to a metal pole without food or even water, and to survive he had to eat his own leg off.
The owners, of course, are responsible and will be held accountable for their actions, for putting the dog in such a dire situation.
Jessica James, 32, and Skylar Craft, 38, residents of South Carolina, have now been charged with mistreatment of animals.
The dog, now called Luke, is six years old, and found by the Ware Shoals Police Department, after they responded to a call about a ‘very skinny’ dog missing over half his leg, poor boy!
According to the news, the Ware Shoals Police Department said:
“When I approached the fence I could see a very skinny black Great Dane with an injury to his back right leg. As he got closer, I could see that over half of his leg was gone”
Owners said that they put the dog on a runner as he kept trying to jump the fence, it was said that they were aware of his injuries but could not afford to take him to a vet!
It was also reported that the couple “gave conflicting accounts” of how long Luke had been tied up!
The rescue group involved said that the poor dog had nearly been starved to death, it was lucky he was even still alive.
The sale rescue association also sad that there were two other dogs at the address and appeared to be fine, but Luke had eaten his own leg off he was so hungry.
Luke has really struggled to recover, but thankfully is making slow progress, he also had some severe intestinal issues too.
“Even though he is Heartworm Positive, the heart issues he has are because he was starved. His electrolytes have been out of balance, and his heart and lungs have been compromised because of this”
Sadly the poor doggie was so poorly, even his leg he chewed off had an infection in it, but he is a real fighter and is fighting every step of the way!
The Rescue group, Noah’s Arks Rescue, wrote:
“He is an amazing dog with an incredible Will to Live. To sustain and maintain a body his size takes Courage, Strength, and Humility”
As he gets better they will perform a clean amputation of the leg, but first, he must get better and stronger, then we hope that he really finds a lovely forever home with so much love he deserves.
