Us dog lovers really are crazy about our dogs, so much so that sometimes they can take priority over almost everything, maybe even a fed-up husband who in this case has left his wife after 25 years when he gave her an ultimatum that didn’t quite go to plan…
This hubby, Mike Haslam, 53-years-old demanded that his wife choose him or the 30 rescue dogs, but he was in for a real surprise he did not expect!
Mrs. Haslam, 49-years-old really was not happy or willing to give up her beautiful doggies and say that she is much happier than before he left her…
A family member said that Mrs. Haslam said: “My husband said it is me or the dogs. I haven’t seen or heard from him since”
Well if this hubby really knew his wife and her love for dog’s maybe he would have either left earlier or not said anything at all!
His wife said:
“I thought after 25 years, he should know giving up the dogs was not what my intentions were …He just got to the point where he had enough and he wanted to slow down …But I wasn’t prepared to give it all up. So he decided to go, and obviously, that was his choice”
The two of them first met when Liz was 16, she left home and moved in with him when she finished at school.
They got married in the January of 1991 and they have a son, 22-years-old, called Ollie.
Liz Haslam had grown up with dogs around her since she was young, in fact, her mother was a breeder and bred West Highland Terriers, her father sold animal food too!
She loved dogs and had a boarding kennel business, it was perfect for her!
She also set up a place to rescue Bull Terrier dogs, called “BedforBullies” and she was fostering many dogs at this stage.
Her time was limited and Mike her hubby was right at the bottom of the pack!
Mrs Haslam said:
“We just drifted more and more apart. He was heavily into his work and it left me with nothing to do. I didn’t want to be a work widow so I buried myself in my dogs …He knew from the moment that we got together what I was all about. I don’t know what he expected”
“He told me he was going and had sorted out some other accommodation so he packed his bags and went …Before we split up he kept saying ‘I do not want to be doing this, I want to get a passport and go away …I said that isn’t going to happen so we might as well go our separate ways, which we did”
Her husband reportedly said that he felt like everything revolved around the dogs!
His Wife Liz says that 18 months after they split-up they have had no further contact with each other, but they are technically still married.
“My son’s grown up and is old enough to look after himself …If I hadn’t buried myself in it I would have just been sitting at home twiddling my thumbs and that’s really not me …My passion for dogs was far too great for Mike.”
“He decided that it would be nice to do more other things in life …He felt as though he wanted his own life back but I said it is too much of a passion of mine to give up.”
“It just got to the point where he was fed up with the dogs and wanted to slow down but that wasn’t my intention”
“It is a very deliberating job, you can’t have a day off,’ she said. ‘I don’t sit down till 11:30pm at night so you can’t just go on holiday.”
“And I can’t just turn around and say I am not going to do it anymore, it is my responsibility, I took the dogs in I can’t just stop.”
“They are rescue dogs which cannot be re-homed …I have taken them in to look after them, I save dogs from all around the world that have been shot and badly injured”
BedforBullies is a charity relying on donations they take on dogs that other rescues won’t, really amazing!
The kennel business, her business that she runs, is a really successful but she only has seven spaces to let out and certainly doesn’t cover all of her running and living costs.
In the end, she now has a vets’ bill of over $5,500 (£4,000) as well as rent arrears on her $1100 (£800) a month home she lives in.
Still, though she is very happy with her life and where she is right now!
“I have re-homed so many dogs and now I am looking for a home …I have chosen to do this. I love it”
SHARE this awesome and lovable story, it just shows how much some of us are dedicated to our doggies!
