A north Alabama police department is looking for suspects after a dog was found with its mouth, nose and paws duct taped.
The dog’s owner found the animal on the porch of their home on the 100 block of Sunset Drive S.E. in Arab on Friday. “The dog, even duct taped, could still breathe,” said Arab Assistant Chief Shane Washburn. “Somebody had just taped its mouth shut.”
The dog sustained cuts when the tape was removed, but no other signs of injury were present, Washburn said.
The owner had left home around 3:30 p.m. and found the dog when she returned a few hours later.
“We don’t have any specific suspects in mind right now,” he said. “We’re looking for all information that might help us find the person responsible.
“This is a very unusual crime,” he added. “Very seldom do we see a crime of this nature where a dog has been bound. It’s just awful.”
Anyone with information should contact Arab police at 256-586-8124.
Washburn said the perpetrator could face a charge of second-degree animal cruelty, a Class A misdemeanor. The charge carries a sentence of up to a year in jail.
