10-year-old Che, a Chow Chow/Golden Retriever mix, has genuinely proved that dogs are man’s best friend by saving his owner during a house fire.
It was around 3 in the morning when residents in Port Richmond, Philadelphia woke up to frantic dog barking.
They realized the barking came from Che, who lived with his owner, Andrea Bulat, in one of the neighboring houses. When they looked outside, they noticed smoke emerging from Bulat’s home.
“They heard Che barking, barking, barking, which is unusual for him to do in the middle of the night,” said Jen. Leary, founder of the Red Paw Emergency Relief that works with firefighters.
“They looked out the window, saw smoke, got their families out and tried to get the neighbor out but they couldn’t get the door open.”
Inside, firefighters found Che on top of his unconscious owner, shielding her from the flames. Although Bulat suffered burns in half of her body, Che kept her from being entirely burned.
Che quickly regained consciousness after receiving oxygen. The Red Paw Emergency Relief Team rushed him to a nearby animal hospital. Where he was treated for smoke inhalation, corneal ulcers, and lung inflammation. Surprisingly, he didn’t have any burns at all.
Because of his age and the amount of smoke he inhaled, veterinarians were unsure if Che would pull through. However, with a healthy dose of fluids and antibiotics, he made a startling recovery.
One of the firefighters who rescued him even paid him a visit the next day! The special guest seem to improve Che’s condition, as he began eating more and was able to go for a short walk.
Che was discharged from the hospital a few days later, and is now in the care of one of Bulat’s close friends. Her friends also paid for Che’s medical bills, which are believed to be over $5,000.
The fire destroyed Bulat’s home, and while she is still in critical condition. Che’s heroic actions saved her from an entirely different fate even if it meant putting himself in danger.
