The number of animals that wind up in shelters is staggeringly high. Too many shelters are overcrowded and forced to make terrible decisions.
According to the ASPCA, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized every year. Roughly 7.6 million companion animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.) enter the shelter system each year.
But almost 700,000 animals that enter shelters are returned to their owners! Because so many animals are processed, there are not enough shelters in the country to manage that number.
Sometimes animals who are lost wind up there, while other animals are surrendered by their owners. The circumstances are upsetting, but the sad truth is many animals are put down because the shelters cannot handle them.
So when one Mama Pit Bull was dumped at a shelter while pregnant, her outlook wasn’t very bright. She became aggressive and overprotective after her puppies were born, which is understandable given her situation. She didn’t know these people and those are her babies!
The pit bull, named Scarlet, and her puppies were set to be euthanized the day after they were born, but mere hours before the horrible process they were saved by a pet lover from Poochies Pet Rescue. The organization contacted the shelter and set up a foster for the family to save their lives!
If you enjoy shelter stories with happy endings, you will love Ginger. She waited 196 days in a shelter after being surrendered for “bad behavior,” but now she’s living in her forever home!
